A fleet-metier based approach of the small scale fishing activity in the French West Indies ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Reynal, Lionel; Demaneche, Sebastien; Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne.
The development of the ecosystemic approach for fisheries supposes to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation. A prerequisite for integrated analysis is the improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, fleet evolution and allocation of fishing effort in the different fisheries. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. This paper first presents a data collection methodology recently applied in the French West (Guadeloupe and Martinique) for the follow up of the whole vessel population. Based on a statistical analysis of these data sets, the paper develops a fleet-metier matrix giving the...

Catalogue international des activités des flottilles de Manche, approche des interactions techniques ArchiMer
Tetard, A; Boon, M; Bennett, D; Berthou, Patrick; Bossy, S; Casey, J; De Clerck, R; Delpech, Jean-paul; Dintheer, C; Giret, M; Large, P; Latrouite, Daniel; Lemoine, Michel; Millner, R; Morizur, Yvon; Ozanne, S; Palmer, D; Pawson, M; Pickett, G; Vince, M.
This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. On this basis, 74 métiers were identified during 1989-90. For each métier we give a brief description of the catching gear, the target species and most usual by-catch, the...

La flottille artisanale française de Manche Ouest. Bilan des connaissances ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Berthou, Patrick; Latrouite, Daniel; Veron, Gerard.
A survey made during 1986-1987 on the artisanal fleet of the artisanal fleet in Northern Brittany and Western part of Cotentin allowed to describe this fleet in term of activity and metiers. Catches are given by species and by type of fishing activity. The result permit to outline interactions between the various activities and exploited resources. A summary of knowledge on exploited species is given.

Les flottilles de pêche dans la mer territoriale du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
The regular aerial survey over the Bay of Biscay (France) by the French Custom Air Service enabled us to record precisely in 2001 the geographical positions of French fishing vessels inside the 12 nautical miles of the French Bay of Biscay (from Bay of Audierne to Spanish border). Among the 2396 ships counted in this area, 1810 were identified, corresponding actually to 900 boats since most of them (52 %) were seen several times. These 900 boats referred to 4 different "métiers", i.e. type of fishing activity: most of them (59 %) were bottom trawlers, 28 % gillnetters, 5 % potters and 5 % longliners; those which used another gear were less than 4 %. General characteristics of the 900 ships were identified: tonnage and power were respectively 25 TJB and 185...

Les pêcheries artisanales de Manche Est. Flottilles et ressources halieutiques ArchiMer
Lemoine, Michel; Giret, Marc.
From Normandy to Belgium bordary, the coastal fishery became during the ten last years a significant social and economic actor, which mostly lives by predominant exploitation of eastern Channel. Recently discovering a situation of resource overexploitation and a difficult cohabitation between "métiers", these coastal fleets are in the heart of various preoccupations of managment at regional, national and european levels. Since 1985, a coordinated programme including Boulogne and Ouistreham allowed to progress in the knowledge of complex fisheries through: improvement of statistics, characterisation of coastal fleets and their activity, assessment of the knowledge on the resources. This synthesis describes, for 1987-88, the quality of the regional landings...

Pêcheries bigoudenes. Bilan des connaissances Activités de pêche, Ressources, Gestion ArchiMer
Biseau, Alain; Maguer, Cedric; Sanz Aparicio, Céline.
Located at the far south-west of Brittany, the pays bigouden is the first of the French maritime regions in terms of landed value and the second one in weights. The bigouden fishing practices are characterised by a large diversity of target species and métiers. Studying the fishing practises leads to a description of the various métiers and fishing strategies together with their trends over the last ten years. Identification of métiers is based on multifactors analysis. Using a classification method based on thresholds of species landings then allows a more objective analysis and leads to a more quantitative characterisation of the trawl métiers, which represent more than 80% of the total fishing activity of this region. Two métiers are based on Nephrops...
